Hiroshi Sugimoto at Hayward Gallery

Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto's contemplation of time finds a fitting backdrop in front of one of his Seascape photographs, an image that epitomizes minimalism with its expansive views of the sea and sky, featuring a horizon so thin it appears outside the confines of any particular era in history.

Sugimoto expresses his perspective, stating, "I regard the camera as a sort of time machine. My gaze doesn't dwell in the future; instead, it journeys to the past, delving into the origins of humanity and civilization. I yearn for a ride in a time machine to witness our beginnings."

This concept of the camera as a vehicle for time travel serves as the foundation for Sugimoto's latest exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London, which will run until January 7, 2024. Within this showcase, Sugimoto delves into his hallmark themes of time's nature, human perception, and the genesis of human consciousness.
